ONCE IN A GENERATION... On February 27, C-3 hosted a panel of key decision makers, waterfront developers and designers, and community representatives to discuss the past, present and future of the San Diego Bay. With the Port of San Diego expected to release a draft of its Port Master Plan Update in March, the time is ripe to assess the current state of San Diego Bay and provide feedback to the Port on its once-in-a-generation update of its land use plans and policies. | Ann Moore, Chair of the Board of Port Commissioners, discussed the history of the Port Master Plan and highlighted important projects currently under construction: the expansive Chula Vista Bayfront redevelopment, the Portside Pier project (replacing the waterfront Anthony's restaurant), and the San Diego Symphony Performance Park. Yehudi Gaffen presented the most recent iteration of his plans for the redevelopment of the Seaport Village area. C3 members were particularly interested in Gaffen's plans for Ruocco Park, named for C3's founder Lloyd Ruocco. | Mike Singleton of landscape architecture firm KTU+A presented on efforts to improve connections from neighboring communities to Chula Vista's waterfront, and plans for restored habitat and new parks. Brad Raulston, City Manager of National City, presented on National City's plans for its Bayfront, which will increase the size of Pepper Park and develop revenue-generating amenities around the existing marina. Finally, Diane Takvorian of the Environmental Health Coalition discussed the group's long history of fighting for environmental justice for communities such as Barrio Logan and National City, which have faced the brunt of the negative impacts of San Diego Bay's industrial waterfront development. |
