The Neighborhood School Dilemma: Should I Stay or Go?


Local schools were once considered fundamental to their neighborhoods. But now, magnet schools, charter schools, zone transfers, and campus security issues have severed strong community ties. Parents are torn: do they give their kids access to the best possible education, even if it’s outside the neighborhood, or keep them in an under-performing school and work on making it better?


Some neighborhood schools have spiraled downward in performance and reputation, and parents are avoiding them. Others are rising to the challenge and rebuilding a sense of community for their children. Our speakers will discuss whether keeping students in neighborhood schools should be a top priority, and how to restore the connections between those schools and their communities.
